Impact strives to give back to the community on an ongoing basis, and this month we have made a donation to Pegasus Community Project, a local organization that provides day-programs for adults with special needs. Many social services for people with disabilities dry up after childhood. Pegasus provides opportunities for people of varying abilities to achieve greater independence, develop work and life skills, and become increasingly active in the wider community. Today we were proud to participate in Skatelife’s annual ball hockey tournament. It was an intense day that reminded us to keep up on our cardio and drink lots of water! The annual fundraiser is Skatelife’s largest, and proceeds go toward continuing to invest in the lives of skateboarding youth across Canada. Learn more about them here!
This fall has been great for outdoor lessons – first at EY Park, and in recent weeks, Underpass – and we’ve seen a new wave of kids begin their skateboarding journey with us! Lessons run for an hour, followed by an hour of free-skate, during which participants can practice what they’ve learned and get some one-on-one help from instructors. We have also been extremely blessed to have amazing volunteers to mentor and help with delivering programs. These guys and girls deserve all of our gratitude for being willing to share their time and talents to help the younger generation of skaters in the city. A big thank you also goes out to all our participants and parents; you are the reason for our success – THANK YOU!
Our donation drive for Nellie’s Shelter was a great success! We would like to thank everyone who contributed, and share a letter of thanks that we received from Nellie’s. Impact is committed to using our platform as skateboarders to affect social change in whatever way we can, and encouraging others to do so as well. We are extremely grateful to be able to support organizations like Nellie’s and we could not have done it without your help. We will continue to support them and hope you do too. Thank you!
Saturday morning lessons will begin on September 30 at East York Skateboard Park. The lessons run from 10-11am, followed by an hour of supervised free skate. Visit the lessons page for more details and how to register.
We are also super excited for the Dearbourne Ave. Street Party this Saturday, September 16! There will be a skateboarding demo, as well as free lessons from 3–4:30pm! We will have some extra gear, but please bring your skateboard and helmet, if you can.
Hope to see you there!
Nellie’s is a registered charitable organization that provides programs and services to women and children who experience violence, poverty, and homelessness. Through education and advocacy they work to achieve social justice for the oppressed. Their support enables families to acquire the skills and resources to overcome barriers and achieve upward social mobility.
We at Impact would like to reach out to all of you and request donations of school supplies for the kids being supported by Nellie’s. I am happy to pick up donations from your home, or you can drop them off at 35 Roseheath Ave, near Coxwell and Danforth (black bin on the porch).
Thank you all for making this such an amazing first year for Impact Skate Camp! It is overwhelming to look back and see how much was accomplished as a camp, and with the campers individually. The weekly skate videos are a great snapshot of the things we all learned over the summer, and I hope that everyone uses the momentum to keep pushing their abilities! In order to continue programming, we are in the process of finalizing an indoor space to use throughout the fall and winter. If you are already on the mailing list you will get details as soon as things are confirmed. In the meantime, we plan on hosting outdoor lessons on Saturday mornings at East York Skatepark while the weather cooperates. If you are not already part of the list and wish to receive our newsletter, you can sign up here.
