Today was our May Youth Council meeting and the topic was oppression and justice. Most of the group already knew, but we all got up to speed on what’s going on in the US, and here at home. We talked about what systemic racism is, and more than that, what we can do.
The hard part of allyship is walking those lines where we speak up for what’s right, while working from a frame of connection and education. And understanding that some people just don’t want/aren’t ready to be reached.
I say this all the time, but our crew are so sharp and so bright—they really do get it. The questions asked, the stories shared, and the active listening show their thirst for knowledge and fairness and justice.
We’re all in this together. I’m so glad that we, as a community, have each other to learn from and lean on.
